Rummy is one of the world's most enduring card games. The rules are simple, but mastery takes years.
Each player is dealt a hand (10 cards for 2 players, 9 for 3, 7 for 4). The remaining cards form the stock pile, with one card turned face-up to start the discard pile. On your turn you draw one card. either from the stock pile or the top of the discard pile. then optionally form melds, then discard one card to end your turn.
A meld is either a sequence (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, e.g., 5♠ 6♠ 7♠) or a tunnela (three or four cards of the same rank, e.g., K♠ K♥ K♦). You may also attach cards to melds already on the table. yours or your opponent's.
The first player to empty their hand wins the round. They score the total value of the cards still held by the other players (Aces = 1, face cards = 10, number cards = face value). The first player to reach 100 total points wins the match.

Most card historians trace Rummy back to Conquian, a Mexican and Spanish card game that appeared in the mid-19th century. Others argue for an older lineage stretching to the Chinese tile game Mahjong, which shares Rummy's draw-and-discard skeleton. Wherever it truly began, Rummy spread rapidly across the world in the early 20th century and now has hundreds of regional variants.
Today's Rummy is a family of games. Indian Rummy (Paplu) with 13 cards and jokers; Gin Rummy tightly built for two players; Canasta from Uruguay with monster 7-card canastas; Kalooki from Jamaica with its infamous 40-point opening meld; Marriage from Nepal with three decks and 21-card hands. Every region put its own spin on the same beautiful core.
The single most under-used piece of information in casual Rummy is the discard pile itself. Every card thrown away tells you something about who doesn't need what. When an opponent picks a discard, remember that card forever. it's part of a meld they're building.
Two adjacent same-suit cards (like 5♠ 6♠) can be completed by four different cards (3♠, 4♠, 7♠, 8♠). A pair of same-rank cards can only be completed by two remaining suits. Runs have twice the outs.
A 6 or 7 can extend runs in both directions and can join a tunnela. A King can only join a K-Q-J run at one end (Ace is low, remember) plus a tunnela. Middle cards give you three or four possible melds; extremes give you one or two.
Every meld reveals information. If you can go out in the next turn or two, hold your melds and explode all at once. If you're four turns out, meld early to reduce risk. Read the room before you play the room.
